No Man is a Watermelon by Sister Mary Corita

Dauntless

Who would have the hoodzpah

to paint a rainbow swash

on an enormous gas storage tank

Who would have the nerve

to color a U.S. postage stamp

with the word LOVE

Who would have the audacity

to paint Wonderbread as 12

irregular ovals in bright primary

colors and not disagree that it might

be a symbol of the communion wafer

Who would have the spunk

to paint a big red tomato with

a poem in the middle

Who would have the daring

to make a sign that said

“make love not war”

Who would have the tenacity

to create a work called “X marks

the spot” and paint a big X on it

Who would be so intrepid

to use so much bright red

and blue and yellow

Only an American nun.
