32 Campbell’s Soup Cans by Andy Warhol

Not a Word of Sense

Try as I might

I cannot acknowledge

that a soup can

can be art.

I can try to relate

to the can of chicken noodle.

It was soup I ate

as a child and maybe liked

but it was just canned soup

too salty, too many

preservatives

too corporate

something to eat

to quench hunger

conveniently and

inexpensively.

I might write

a long account

as to why

a strange young man

can paint a Campbell soup can

and convince people

it was art

and it can become

part of the western cannon

but if I did

it would make

not a word of sense.
