Creation Myth
The Great Spirit cupped his hands
into clay and made a bowl of molten lava
(how like the hot center of earth).
It cooled into a deep winter sunset.
On its rim he placed all the plants
and birds and animals and people
(how like the thin crust of earth that holds
all life) but too soon it became all human
this rim of teeth where the humans
ate up the world with their high rises
skyscrapers, towers, all the many
ways they tried to reach the sky.
And the Great Spirit was sad.
So he sent the artist to tell us
We must change our lives.
